who are we?

NYU Lotus is an interest group for an Asian-interest, but not Asian-exclusive sorority at New York University. Lotus was founded in September 2014. We named ourselves Lotus because the flower represents beauty, prosperity, purity, and eternity emerging from a messy and complicated background. The seven petals on the flower represent the seven founding sisters.

We come from different backgrounds, with contrasting personalities and various interests, but we were brought together with common goals— to promote cultural awareness, to give back to the community, and to find a lasting sisterhood in which we can learn to improve ourselves and each other. We do so by hosting events and volunteering at various community service events throughout the year. While striving to promote unity in the Asian-American community, we aim to educate those around us, but most importantly, we hope to empower young women alike to reach for their highest potential.

"As a lotus flower is born in water, grows in water and rises out of water to stand above it unsoiled, so I, born in the world, raised in the world having overcome the world, live unsolied by the world." -Buddha
